La Altagracia Province is the easternmost and largest in the Dominican Republic. Officially, it covers 2,998 km² with a population of over 400,000 inhabitants. The majority of young population is involved in tourism, although both agriculture and cattle farming are also well-developed. The province got its name in honor of the Virgin of Altagracia, the protector of the Dominican people. The Basilica of Higüey is the tallest and most renowned pilgrimage sanctuary in the country attracting thousands of visitors each year.
