Saona Island is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) off the southeastern coast of La Altagracia province and is a part of the Cotubanamá National Ecological Reserve. The island covers 110 square kilometers (42 square miles) and is surrounded and washed by the Caribbean Sea. There are two settlements on the island: Mano Juan – the only inhabited village, and Catuano – a naval outpost. The island is entirely powered by renewable energy produced by a solar plant, which supplies electricity to its almost 600 residents.
The first inhabitants, the Taíno indigenous people, called the island Adamanay – Island of Refuge. In 1494, during the second voyage to the Americas, Christopher Columbus discovered the island accompanied by his friend Michele da Cuneo, who was offered to govern the island and named it Bella Savona (after his hometown). Over time, the name was reduced, and today the island is known as Saona.
Saona Island is home to diverse ecosystems and endemic plants life, including wild shrublands, mangroves, and a variety of bird species such as seagulls, pelicans, brown boobies, flamingos, and parrots. The island is also an important nesting site for sea turtles.
Saona Island is well known among tourists visiting the Dominican Republic. The full-day beach excursion to Saona Island is one of the most popular. Its paradise-like white sand beaches, countless palm trees, and included traditional lunch attract many visitors of our country.
The classic excursion from Punta Cana or other destinations of the country typically includes transportation to the port of Bayahibe, sailing to the island on a catamaran, a stop at a natural pool (sandbar), a three hour-stay at the beach on Saona Island with a traditional lunch, and a return trip on speedboats to the port.
On our Adamanay Caribbean Adventures private group tour, we offer a slightly different and more extensive and interesting program. In the first part of the day, we visit several beaches on the island: Catuano Beach, Canto de la Playa Lagoon with snorkeling, and Mano Juan village walking cultural tour of the community and a visit of the newly born sea turtles refuge. Afterwards, we enjoy lunch on the island’s main beach and relax in the waves of the sea. The visit to the natural pool (sandbar) is also included.
We always wish you the most emotional and memorable journey!
